LISTEN MELBOURNE

Melbourne is a playground for musical collaboration and experimentation.

Even within a city defined by unique storytellers, Nai Palm stands out.

While the pipeline to acclaim may be shorter for some artists, there always remains a special love for the community who raised you, the ranks you came up through. For the Melbourne music scene, it’s this dedication to community that has bred constant innovation and inspiration for artists and fans alike.

Our headliner treated our intimate audience at Hope St Radio to her dynamic, genre-bending tracklist. The experimental artist immersed us in her bold musical world, debuting her playlist through LS60 Wireless and KC92.

Relive the evening with us.

An Evening With Nai Palm

Melbourne native Nai Palm is a true reflection of her city – quirky, creatively liberated, driven by community.

The multi-talented composer, instrumentalist, producer, vocalist and poet captivates with her intuitive, infectious artistry. Her band Hiatus Kaiyote, which she co-founded in 2011, has earned worldwide acclaim with their uncompromising artistic vision.

At Listen Melbourne, we got a peek at the sounds that have shaped and moved her.

BEHIND THE SONGS

Get lost in Nai Palm’s tracklist, curated exclusively for Listen Melbourne.

Heard for the first time through LS60 Wireless and KC92 on the night, new details were revealed to both the artist and our audience as each track was played.

Curtis Mayfield - “Give Me Your Love (Love Song)”, 1972

“One of the strongest and most lush arrangers of our time. We will get to hear all of the colours on display with this one.”

Dom Um Romão - “Escravos de Jó”, 1976

“The horns are a vision of clarity and the vocal harmonies are incredibly gorgeous and full. Then, in the centre of the song, it sonically gets very simple and dry; great dynamic. Plus, I utterly adore Brazilian music.”

Nina Simone - “Golden Earrings”, 1961

“ I remember being deeply shook the first time I heard this song. She has a depth of voice that really sings on a good system; like a volcano of depth.”

Poev Vanary - “Huos Haenuy Bong (It’s Too Late)”, 2014

“This is a Carole King cover by a Cambodian band. Lots of cool interesting instruments, and I thought it would be good to hear a classic song in a different context. I love listening to music from all over the world—specifically to hear the difference in mixes.”
